30 June threat: City plans prioritise public safety

The City’s Safety and Security Directorate is working closely in support of SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs to deal with possible disruptions and unrest related to planned ‘shutdown’ protests.
The City has already activated area-based Joint Operations Centres.
Operations on 30 June will be coordinated by the Disaster Coordinating Team (DCT) in Goodwood.
Teams continue to monitor for any disruptions and credible threats leading up to tomorrow, 30 June.
The City is participating in coordinated planning with SAPS as the leading crime prevention and public order policing authority, and other relevant partners.
Key priorities are to:
prevent violence and protect the public
monitor, manage and respond to the planned 30 June 2026 march and any associated actions;
maintain public order across all four Metropolitan areas; and
ensure a swift, visible and coordinated response to any incident of intimidation, looting or violence.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre is assisting with the coordination of humanitarian relief efforts at the Epping Refugee Centre.
DRM officials and volunteers are assisting with transport, and coordinating humanitarian relief and providing inflatable tents to store the belongings of persons awaiting assistance at the centre. DRM also procured ablution facilities
‘This City remains committed to ensuring the safety of everyone. As indicated previously, everyone has the constitutional right to protest, but that right cannot infringe on the rights of others. We will not tolerate any violence or disruptions in our City. We are also alert to opportunistic criminals who might want to exploit the situation. Our enforcement agencies will use all of the tools available to them to act swiftly and decisively against any person who breaks the law.
‘We also reiterate our call to the public to be vigilant and to report any incidents immediately so that enforcement services may respond, I am aware the situation has caused tension and anxiety among Capetonians, but I want to assure them that City enforcement are ready for tomorrow,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The public is reminded to report incidents and emergencies or any suspicious and/or criminal activities to the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 OR logging by-law and traffic related complaints using the Safety and Security feature on the City App.
Residents can utilise the anonymous tip-off line 0800 11 0077 to notify the City of any planned unrest.
Meanwhile, in general enforcement efforts over the past week, the City’s enforcement agencies arrested 433 suspects and issued 56 588 fines for traffic and bylaw transgressions.
Law Enforcement officers made 215 arrests and issued 8 936 notices; their Metro Police counterparts made 127 arrests, including 34 for driving under the influence, and issued 7 654 fines.
On the roads, Traffic Officers arrested 91 suspects – 86 for drunk driving, one for reckless and negligent driving and four more on various charges. They executed 2 033 warrants, impounded 201 public transport vehicles and issued 39 998 fines.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 057 calls for assistance this past weekend.
